DemoCamp 13

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

The next DemoCamp (number 13) is Tuesday, April 24, at No Regrets.  The schedule looks pretty interesting: a couple of longer presentations, and then some lightning demos of really truly running products no sales presentations thank you very much.  I probably won't be there (babies take precedence ;-), but I ...

Schneier and Lemons

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Interesting piece from Bruce Schneier on "A Security Market for Lemons".  Sadly, the only conclusion I can reach is that better security depends on people knowing more, which (probably) means it ain't gonna happen...

Dynamic Languages Symposium in Montreal this October

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

A Dynamic Languages Symposium will be held in Montreal on October 22 (in conjunction with OOPSLA).  I've put my interest in extensible programming on hold to pursue other projects, but I'd still like to attend.  Anyone else planning on going?

Summer of DrProject

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

As noted previously, we have quite a team working for us this summer, four of whom are full-time on DrProject. Two of the students (Jeff Balogh and David Cooper) will be rebuilding the ticketing system, but we still have to figure out what Alex Krizhevsky and David Wolever should ...

Three Other SoCs at U of T

Monday, April 16th, 2007

I announced a few posts ago that three U of T (and one from Central Florida) had received Summer of Code awards to work with us this summer.  Turns out that three other U of T students have won awards as well: Jin Chen, for a performance analysis and anomaly detection ...

Jorge Aranda on OLPC

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

I didn't grow up in a developing [1] country, so anything I have to say about the One Laptop Per Child program should be taken with a large grain of salt.  Jorge Aranda, on the other hand, is from Mexico, so I think his "Friendly Criticism of OLPC" posting deserves ...

Streetknit and the Scott Mission

Friday, April 13th, 2007

Just before the baby was born, Sadie dropped off a second batch of Streetknit stuff at the Scott Mission in Toronto, and now they've put her in their newsletter. With the late winter storms we've been having, it's nice to know that some people will be warmer than they ...

One Laptop Per Child

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Mike Fletcher came to U of T today and gave a talk on the One Laptop Per Child program, complete with a hardware demo. Greg Lapouchnian took some pictures: If you want to help make the world a better place, Mike would like to hear from you...

Why Open Source Fails on Windows

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Interesting post from Scott Bellware: "Why Open Source Tools Will Always Fail to Gain Non-Trivial Adoption in the Microsoft Developer Space". The short answer is "documentation", which is DrProject's greatest weakness.  Gonna have to do something about this...  (And note: I think the only reason it isn't an obstacle on ...

RIP Kurt Vonnegut

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Kurt Vonnegut passed away earlier today at the age of 84.  So it goes...
