Selling Open Source

June 13, 2005 – 9:36 pm

An editorial I wrote on selling open source is up at Doctor Dobb’s Journal. It uses the state of Python web programming frameworks to make a broader point about the need for more egoless programming in the open source world.

  1. One Response to “Selling Open Source”

  2. “Sometimes, sharing code isn’t enough; sometimes, the best thing you can do is volunteer to throw yours away.”

and than what kind of compensation Open Source developer has ? how paricipating in the large Open Source project is different from working in any commercial company ? and it is not only about ego. the problem as i see it is that in many cases to bring new idea into the official release even tougher than to plug it (under the carpet) into commercial product.

i think that time will inevitably take care of these problems. typical development time in the Open Source projects tends to be long. lack of any kind of time-tables is both weaknees and strength of Open Source. we have to prepare to wait and eventually we will see clear leader.
