Sometimes I Don’t Like Our Species Very Much

…a court in [Saudi Arabia] this week sentenced a female victim of gang rape to six months in prison and 200 lashes for being alone with a man who was not her relative. The 200 lashes included in the sentence…more than doubled the woman’s original punishment of 90 lashes. The court boosted her penalty because of the victim’s “attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media…”

Yet again, a country which the US and Canada gives diplomatic creedence to reveals itself as a barbarous state, mysogynist in the extreme, and a rigid proponent of a religion steeped in hatred and inequality. Perhaps before we blindly follow Bush and Harper into further Middle East expansionism, we might reflect upon who it is we are actually supporting. Is this is an indication of the new world of Islam we might anticipate in a “freed” Iraq, Afghanistan, or Iran? Will there still be female circumcision or honour killings? Will the fundamentalist and violent interpretations of the Koran prevail in a post-war environment? Obviously we tolerate this behaviour with our “friends” in Saudi Arabia. In oil we trust.

I agree with the sentiment, but I make no secret of my belief that Canada should expand its role in Afghanistan (which is, despite some efforts to obscure the fact, a UN-sanctioned NATO operation). As bad as things may be, they’ll be a lot worse if we pull out.
